Alien: Romulus Reminds Me Horror is Good (Review)

Foreword I have a very particular taste in horror movies. When I was young and first discovered horror, I became obsessed with it. I may be able to trace that obsession back to video games with what little footage I saw of Resident Evil 4 and how desperately I wanted to play it, despite being far too young to purchase it myself. It could also be a product of the fascination with ghosts and spirits and demons I had. Regardless, I've consumed a fair bit of the horror genre as a whole. I've played numerous games, own several books, and have watched many movies, shows and videos. Perhaps this is why I have a love and hate relationship with horror movies.  I believe the problem, which is an issue for fictional media as a whole, is that horror relies heavily on the unexpected. If you've ever seen John Carpenter's Halloween, you've seen every slasher flick. If you've seen The Exorcist (I haven't. Be nice) you've seen every procession movie. If you have past ex...

Virt-Ed-Go: Ed, Edd n' Eddy Episode Eight Review

Foreword Ed, Edd N Eddy for the longest time has been my favorite cartoon. Recently, HBOMax has picked up several cartoons from the late 90s and early 2000s. Unsurprisingly, I went on an immediate nostalgia bender and watched the entire series with my lady love. And what better way to celebrate several of my favorite cartoons than by systematically reviewing each episode, starting with the dorks of Peach Creek. For all of my new readers – Hey, welcome to Patchwork! - Each episode will be reviewed on a 10 point rating scale. I'll be focusing on four aspects of the show and pulling the average to get a final tally. The four categories we'll be measuring are: The Story – The Plot of the episode, as well as the characters themselves. The Visuals – Whether they be character, backgrounds or accessories. The Comedy – This is a “haha” funny show, so it needs decent comedy. The Scam – The Ploy the Eds concoct to weasel the allowances of the other kids. With the formalities out of the w...

Does Sonic Break the Curse of Video Game - Movies? (Sonic the Hedgehog)

Video game movies have been struggling for years. They range from either horribly bad to mediocre. With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog, does the blue blur break the cycle of less than great video game movies? Or does it fall for into the same hole of it's predecessors? Well to begin - Let's discuss Sonic's design, both visual and otherwise. I enjoy his overall appearance. Of course, there's the controversy of what his old look was like- I won't cover that too much. Instead, I'll state that I like his cute design we see in the final release. He looks like Sonic and I feel he sounds like himself as well. Sonic in the movie is played by Ben Schwartz, that you may know as the voice of Dewey from the Ducktales reboot. Personally, the voice of Roger Craig Smith ( Sonic from the games ) is the definitive voice of the blue hedgehog. That is to say, Ben Schwartz does play a decent Sonic, even if his voice is identical to that of Dewey's. And as far as Sonic...

One Leap Ahead of the Critics (Aladdin Live Action Review)

Aladdin has always been one of, if not my top, favorite Disney movie. I love the story, the songs, the energy, and the characters. When I heard they were making a live action version I was skeptical, and perhaps a little angry. When I heard Will Smith was going to play Genie and saw him all made up - I thought it was going to be a massive failure. The movie proved me wrong and then some. The remake is wonderful and rivals the original. Let me break it down a little. So the story is pretty much the exact same. There are a few changes, such as how Aladdin meets Jasmine and certain characters have different conclusions. The changes do nothing but help the film. The beginning moments felt a little rushed but helped us get passed the necessary build ups we're familiar with. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The movie opens on Will Smith and his family on a sail boat. They were going to an undisclosed location and the children ask for Will Smith to tell them a story. He ...
