Foreword
Sex is awesome.
Perhaps a cursed way to start a blog post but how does one start a review of Huniepop? As I daydream while working my 9 to 5, I thought about starting a discussion about adult entertainment and its place in gaming and society as a whole. But the fact that I'm writing a review for said adult video game, have done Let's Plays for both the original and its sequel, and I run a show where we shamelessly talk about adult games every Valentine's Day; should be evidence enough that I feel adult entertainment is pretty great.
There are caveats, of course. Is it for everyone? Of course not. There are those who think sex in the media is taboo and immoral and, while I don't think it should ever be outright banned, I can understand the argument for certain games. I don't think something like The Elder Scrolls games need blatant sex scenes. There are also definitely cases where it would harm the game, an example being a Battlefield or Call of Duty where such scenes would be so horribly out of place.
But are there times and places where sex in video games is fun, enjoyable and melds well with the narrative? Absolutely. Excluding straight up pornography games like HuniePop, some “romance” moments in games like Mass Effect or Baldur's Gate works well and is a fine addition.
So, yeah. Sex is awesome and is something to be celebrated and I am glad games like HuniePop exist. That being said… it's not a perfect experience. Let's break it down.
The Story
HuniePop opens with our main character (name never stated and gender is user determined, since it is a self-insert story) at a bar when they are approached by a strange, yet gorgeous, woman. After failing to be charming, this woman reveals herself (not yet) to be a love fae that comes from the Faerie World named Kyu Sugardust.
Our character is hopelessly single and unsexed. It is Kyu's job, as a love fae, to take us from the unbangable virgin to a lover worthy of Venus herself.
So the premise is… fine for what HuniePop is. There have certainly been worse set ups for horny games, if they had any at all. While the virgin shaming is a little gross, the game does treat it as a joke rather than a legitimate theme or character trait.
From this opening the game heavily relies on your interaction with the girls for anything resembling a narrative. There's not really a resolvable conflict or a big bad (unless you count
Venus who is somewhat treated like a final boss) and the game doesn't really need one. The main goal is to have sex and there's something of merit to be found there.
There are a total of twelve girls available for you to date with four of them (if memory serves) acting as unlockable characters. The girls you meet each embody a particular archetype and they stick pretty close to that singular personality trait.
It would have been nice to see these characters go through some kind of personal questline or develop in some way as characters and we do get certain glimpses of that. The example that usually comes to mind is Audrey, who serves as the tsundere / brat character. She is purposefully disrespectful and often makes rude comments on everyone and everything. After you have a night of romance with her, she does seem to warm up to the player a bit. She still sticks to her main character trait, but she always seemed a little less mean to you.
I won't go into every girl you can romance (here's my ranking of the girls if you want more info: https://bradicalradical.blogspot.com/2025/10/the-best-girl-huniepop-girls-for-all.html) but know that, while they are mostly one dimensional, there is a decent range of personalities and fetishes. The bright and ambitious college girl, a mother that makes adult entertainment, a teacher that hates her job, an anti-social gamer girl - it's likely you'll find at least one of the girls attractive or vibe well with their personality.
And that's kind of the extent of the story. If it feels like this section is just kind of ending, the game has a similarly unceremonious conclusion. Once you've had sex with all the girls you'll unlock a hard mode and you can continue to play the puzzle game, as well as reexperience the sex scenes (which aren't overly graphic). But other than that there isn't a concrete and definitive end to HuniePop, not that it necessarily needs one.
Overall, the characters are enjoyable and fun to talk with even if they are a bit one note. I feel HuniePop's story earns a 6/10.
The Gameplay
Arguably the main selling point of HuniePop… other than naked ladies- is the gameplay. HuniePop follows a very engaging gameplay loop.
Players will work through a day that consists of four phases: Morning, Afternoon, Evening, and Night. During these phases you are able to travel to one of the many locations to meet up with a girl. As soon as you move to a new location, the day will progress to the next phase.
While you are with a girl you are able to talk to her (who woulda thunk it), give her items that will either unlock customization options or assist you in the date, or (of course) go on a date.
The date segment is where the main gameplay starts. Each date requires you to reach a point goal within a certain amount of moves during a “match three” style puzzle (similar to Candy Crush).
The puzzles have a decent difficulty progression that can make the later dates fairly challenging. The first couple puzzle boards you are faced with should be a breeze, so long as you are paying attention to what's going on. Later on, you'll need to get good at anticipating how the new tokens will fall into the board (which is all RNG) and which items to utilize during the date.
There are several token types and each lady has preference to a particular type of affection. A girl that prefers sexuality tokens will net you more points when you match them, for example. The items that you can bring on dates enable you to manipulate the RNG, to a degree. Date gifts can increase a certain token's fall rate, consume all of one token type, remove hazardous broken heart tokens, and so on.
As you progress through the game you'll earn two different types of currency, Hunie and Money. You earn more Hunie by going on dates, with successful dates granting a bonus. Hunie can then be used to upgrade your stats - each correlating with an affection type and will yield better match results from that token.
You earn money by talking to women (is it that easy?). You can then purchase items that the girls like, as well as food and booze. Feeding women allows you to talk to them more (this is the funnest review I've ever written) or can be carried over to a date so that you start with more moves. Getting a girl drunk will lower the point total for that particular date. And finally, giving a girl an item she likes (such as buying the gym junkie weights) will randomly give you a date gift that you can use during the puzzle segment. You'll also unlock different outfits and hair styles for the girl you give presents to, allowing you to customize their look a little bit.
And that is essentially the gameplay loop of HuniePop. Talk to ladies, give them gifts, food or booze, and then take them on a lovely date where you'll do a match 3 puzzle that you'll become way too invested in. There are no more gameplay elements…
So there are sex scenes. This is a horny game, after all, so banging the ladies is the ultimate
goal. After a fourth successful date during the night phase (when the stars align), the girl you're dating will ask to be invited back to your place. You'll then be met with a pretty girl in her undies and yet another match 3 puzzle board. This time, however, what you match is irrelevant and there isn't a move limit. You just need to match tokens fast enough to reach the “finish line”.
These sex scenes aren't as explicit as it sounds. The naughtiest parts are that the girl will take her bra off (SCANDALOUS!) and moan whenever you match a token. After successfully hitting the point goal you'll be rewarded with post coitus artwork.
And that is HuniePop from a gaming stand point. It's mostly a puzzle game with some minor RPG and dating sim elements and that's exactly what makes HuniePop as good as it is. There are numerous sex games on the internet. I'd even wager there are more horny games than non-horny games in existence and HuniePop's gameplay loop may be the most addictive. The puzzles are legitimately tons of fun and there are real moments of strategizing that make the game tense. I also think how it handles the naughty time is done well. I've yet to play a porn game (cause I'm a good boy and don't play those) that didn't consist of a few button presses that made a .gif play. Dare I say it's even classy? Maybe. It's certainly good and earns its score of 8/10.
The only parts that cause it to lose points is that it does get a tad repetitive and the RNG can be a touch rage inducing.
The Visuals
Do I comment on how sexy the girls are? No. I don't think I will.
While each character is easily identifiable at a glance, one major complaint I have is that the girls tend to suffer from same face syndrome. Tear away their clothes (relax), hair and makeup and I'm sure you'll find they look identical. This isn't a huge issue with the character designs, but it's still notable.
The scenery is beautiful. Every location you go to, whether it be a date or more public area,
looks incredible. I've enjoyed the detailed and varied backgrounds so much that I've even used some of them as desktop backgrounds.
The menu system and user interface is fine. Most everything is accessed through the Hunie Bee, your in game cell phone. From there you can access your inventory, check the preferences of each girl and their answers to your questions, and view the gallery as well as messages the girls send after each successful date. The menu is simple to use and pretty easy to navigate.
The game board where you'll be matching all the tokens is also… fine. The tokens themselves are easily identifiable with each one taking on a specific color and sporting a unique symbol. As such, the puzzles look colorful and bright- almost too much so. Perhaps this is a personal problem but after staring at the board for long enough my eyes do start to feel strained. This could be a result of hyper focusing and trying to find matches that work well but I can feel myself begin to go cross eyed after a bit.
Overall, the visuals are pretty and deserve praise, earning it an 8/10.
The Audio
Quite arguably the best category for HuniePop. The music ranges anywhere from pleasant background noise to absolute banger. With 23 unique tracks, each location has a theme that wonderfully fits the vibe. The Ice Rink is mainly composed of bells that give a cozy, winter feel. The night club has a dubstep feel that you would expect a club would play. It's great and I can't think of a single track I absolutely didn't like, though to be fair it's been a minute since I played through the game. I can honestly say I would listen to the soundtrack passively or use the songs for background music in videos.
The sound effects are serviceable. Mostly a lot of *dings* and *blubs* as you match tokens during the dates. The menu systems also provide some audio haptics but nothing overly noteworthy in either the positive or negative. The sounds are soundful and I like hearing them.
And the final audio aspect to consider with HuniePop is the voice acting. HuniePop is a fully voice acted game with each girl having a ton of noises to make. The cast deserves high praise. Each girl has a unique actress and, fun fact, a good majority of them of transgender (ya love to see it). One complaint I can think of, which is minor but I feel is worth bringing up, is that some of the non-white characters are still voiced by white actors. To be clear, I don't think anyone is to blame and this is just a thing that ended up happening but it would've been nice to have a Black V/A for Lola or an Indian V/A for Beli. Thankfully, and to everyone's credit, none of the actors do any stereotypical accents.
Each character is voiced well and are as believable as they need to be. I wouldn't say any of the performances are award winning (which I don't think I know enough about acting to even make that judgement) but each girl is pleasant to listen to… with some caveats.
Much like with the rest of HuniePop, some of the girls tend to lean heavily into their singular character type. Tiffany sounds bubbly and energetic, Jessie talks with a sultry undertone with a hint of smoker scratch, and Momo has a high pitch, overly cute voice that I hate. Now, I don't think this is necessarily negative. The girls sound like how you would picture them; what is Jessie supposed to sound like if not sultry? But, it does remove any chance for deeper complexities. You don't hear the characters get angry unless you mess up during the puzzle segment, or hear them when they are overly sad or groggy from just waking up.
I suppose my point is that, while Jessie is expected to be sultry, not everyone sounds sultry all the time. I really like the voice acting and sound effects and soundtrack. No, I will not talk about how each girl moans during the naughty segments and some of it gets me really hot and bothered. It's not that kind of Blog (yes it is. I'm not sorry).
HuniePop easily earns an 8/10. Really well done but missing some complexity and sometimes certain voices or songs can be grating.
The Final Tally
Quick math shows us that HuniePop earns a
7.5/10
An enjoyable experience that I really do recommend and, let's be honest, expect anyone that enjoys adult dating games to have played. I don't want to put it as a pinnacle of horny games but it's at the very least the standard. The only thing hurting it is that there's not as much depth as I would've liked. If the characters were more complex and the gameplay a little more varied, it would've earned a higher score. Really, it just needed to do a little bit more.
