Virt-Ed-Go: Ed, Edd n' Eddy Episode Eight Review

Foreword

Ed, Edd N Eddy for the longest time has been my favorite cartoon. Recently, HBOMax has picked up several cartoons from the late 90s and early 2000s. Unsurprisingly, I went on an immediate nostalgia bender and watched the entire series with my lady love. And what better way to celebrate several of my favorite cartoons than by systematically reviewing each episode, starting with the dorks of Peach Creek.

For all of my new readers – Hey, welcome to Patchwork! - Each episode will be reviewed on a 10 point rating scale. I'll be focusing on four aspects of the show and pulling the average to get a final tally. The four categories we'll be measuring are:

The Story – The Plot of the episode, as well as the characters themselves.

The Visuals – Whether they be character, backgrounds or accessories.

The Comedy – This is a “haha” funny show, so it needs decent comedy.

The Scam – The Ploy the Eds concoct to weasel the allowances of the other kids.

With the formalities out of the way, let's dive into episode eight of Ed, Edd N' Eddy:

Virt-Ed-Go

The title card places us high up in a tree. A kid appears to be reaching out to an angry bird; either trying to pet the bird or steal the eggs. If we look further down at the ground, we can see several footprints that appear to be walking in circles.

Overall, not a bad title card. Certainly not the nightmare fuel that we are sometimes subjected to. The nice, bright colors and scene has me guessing that we're getting some kind of hide-and-seek episode.

This Mis-Edventure starts with the Eds hanging out over a drainage grate. The Eds all shout and holler with excitement and disappointment. We see Eddy is attempting to navigate a string down the grate. On the other end of this string is a bit of chewed up gum, which the Eds are attempting to attach to a quarter that fell to the bottom.

Eddy, somehow, is able to thread the coin up the grate and attain their reward, proclaiming “Who's the man with the plan?”. The shortest Ed holds the coin high in the air in celebration, only to have it scooped up by a bird flying by. The boys watch in shocked annoyance before Ed chases after the avian, upset about the creature stealing his gum.

Eddy then has an existential crisis, asking “When does the torment stop?” and “Who invented birds anyway?”. Double D ignores his friend's babbling and produces a collapsible telescope and begins trying to find the bird. Ed comments on how the bird got away before pointing out that a plane flying overhead “got a cape”. Eddward turns in the direction of Ed's pointing, smacking him in the back of the head in the process.

Eddy, having come back to the moment, points out that it is towing a sign. The sign reading: “It's hip, it's now – Come To Joe's Clubhouse”. After thinking for half a second, a new scam dawns on Eddy. The boy suggests that they build a clubhouse and charge an admission fee. The other boys are on board and the trio begins looking for a location. Eddy proclaims that they found the perfect spot, only to have Kevin shout at them from a window to “get out of my backyard”. Ed comments that it's “Weird. Kevin already has a clubhouse here” and I'm left laughing at one of the best jokes in the episode. 10/10 joke – this is the type of comedy that I love to see.

Their second location leads them to the top of a trash heap. Eddy remarks on the view but Double D argues about how unsanitary it is. Their discussion gets cut short by Ed, who is fighting off a flock of seagulls – which further supports my Fishing Town theory, which I should probably make a dedicated blog post to. It should be noted that the episode doesn't specifically call them seagulls, but they certainly don't appear to be pigeons. Regardless, Ed is attempting to protect his crème puff (where he got it before coming here, I'm not sure) and tosses the treat to Eddy to get the birds away from it. Eddy makes no attempt at catching it and instead gets covered in the crème, along with Double D. Ed rushes pass them, only for the birds to give chase, pecking at the boys as they run.

The third location has the Eds hanging out inside a mail drop box (Do these still exists or have I never lived in an urban enough of an environment to see them?). Double D disapproves, stating that the lack of oxygen is disturbing and that there isn't nearly enough space. Meanwhile, Ed answers a phone call... somehow, since this is the age before cell phones (Yes, I'm ancient. I do remember a time before cell phones.) and states that he may have already won $10,000.

The boys sulk through the neighborhood as Eddy states how important a good location is. Noticing that Double D has stopped paying attention, the lead Ed stops to see what the sock head is looking at. He points excitedly, exclaiming “There!” as we got an odd Dutch Angle. The camera pans and we see that Edd has spotted a lovely tree that would be perfect for bearing a clubhouse. The boys rush forward but are stopped by Eddy, who insists that they inspect it first.

Eddy looks over the tree, staring at it from different angles. Ed runs up and gives it a hearty kick, which causes a bird's nest to fall on top of his head. We see a bird peak out of the nest with a quarter in its beak before the camera quickly cuts back to Eddy's inspection. Double D arrives on the scene and gives a thorough investigation, stating that the foliage is healthy and giving it a sniff before declaring the tree perfect. The boys all agree that it'll be their new clubhouse, before Ed asks “Where's the door, Eddy?”. The short Ed-boy explains how the clubhouse still needs to be built before noticing the avian thief and attempting to swipe at it. The bird takes off, leaving Eddy frustrated.

A screen wipe (don't see those anymore in media) brings us to a display of tools, equipment and otherwise junk that belongs in shed or a garage strewn out on the grass in front of the tree. Eddy states how their parents will never miss them before asking if any of the boys know how to use them. Eddy starts pointlessly whacking the tree with a hammer and we get the all too familiar Sumo wrestling sound (yes, you know the one if you have seen any of Ed, Edd N Eddy or various YouTubers). Double D rushes over, scolding Eddy and telling him to stop, since trees have feelings. He yells “What are you doing?” - Props to the voice actor for this line read. I can hear and feel the outrage. Eddy innocently answers that he's building a clubhouse. Edd drops his outrage and explains how they need lumber before they - “Hey Double D, we need some wood, start looking”.

The Eds begin their search for wood, but not before Ed rides on a pile driver in the background, shouting “Yip Yip Kai Ooo” - a phrase that he'll shout a couple times over the series. Eddy asks himself “where does wood grow” and I can't help but notice the line of trees that decorate the background. Jonny then arrives on scene with Plank in hand, not so subtly tapping the Ed-boy with the board. He asks Jonny to buzz off while he thinks, to which the boy innocently taps him again. He tosses Plank, telling him to cut it out before realizing that Plank is... a plank of wood. The lumber whacks Ed in the head, knocking him off his pile driver Pogo stick. The two kids race towards Plank, with Eddy reaching him first. He nefariously states how “Plank would make a great clubhouse” which is horrific in many ways. Imagine if someone told you they wanted to build a house out of your best friend's body – metal on various levels. Double D points out that they would need significantly more lumber than what Plank's tiny body could provide (Goodness, I made it worse didn't I) while Eddy argues how Edd is getting hung up on details. Eddy uses the threat to coerce Jonny into helping them find wood, to which he agrees, stating that “Plank knows. He sees things.”.

Jonny leads the kids to a trash can, pointing while the camera gives us yet another Dutch Angle. I'm not sure why this episode utilizes it so often. For those unfamiliar, a Dutch Angle is when the camera is titled on it's side, showing the characters or scene at an odd angle to give the viewer the sense of things being off or ominous. It is designed give the viewer an uneasy feeling, but this episode uses it more as a way of showing the characters looking at something off screen. It's very strange.

They find that Jonny lead them to a single, dirty Popsicle stick. Ed grabs the timber and proudly declares “Got it, Eddy.” - which elicited a chuckle from me. Eddy scolds Jonny and tells him to stop messing around. Plank eventually delivers, the boys first finding a plywood base sitting in a mud puddle. Ed lifts the square high in the air and a screen fade shows us the strong boy struggling to hold up the massive amount of wood the Eds have gathered. Eddy orders Ed to go the tree, to which the Ed-boy anguishly replies, “I can't move”. Double D confidently whips up a big brain plan, using a car jack to raise Ed high up enough for Eddy to smack a skateboard under him. With a hearty push, Eddy sends the Ed boy flying on the skateboard in the direction of the tree. He reaches the tree without issues, but is unable to dismount the skateboard without having the stack fall on top of him. He crawls out and declares “the maple has landed”.

Double D finishes a blueprint sketch as Eddy commands Ed up the tree. We learn that Ed is scared of heights and has issue climbing the tree of his own volition. Double D has the ingenious idea of using a pulley system (call back to the previous episode?) to raise the Ed boy into the tree. Ed still is too frightful and claws into the dirt beneath, not unlike my cat when I attempt to move her literally anywhere. With Eddy's help, the two boys get Ed into the tree, along with a large hunk of dirt. Eddy stares at the tree and marvels at the prospect while Edd reviews the blueprints. The dirt underneath Ed eventually gives through, starting one of the better slap stick segments this season offers. The running gag is mainly Ed falling out of the tree numerous times and the boys having to repeatedly raise him back up. After Ed falls a total of six times, the boys eventually tie him to a branch to finish up with the painting of the clubhouse.

After a lengthy construction process, the clubhouse is revealed and is not nearly as neat as Double D had drawn it. The Eds are happy nonetheless and declare that everyone will want to join. The boys travel to the park to find potential suckers members. There they find all the neighborhood kids hanging out and playing. The Eds arrive, ready to give their pitch while dressed in tropical clothes. Eddy drinks from a coconut while Ed and Edd hold paperwork. Eddy proclaims how great it is to be in the club, gaining curiosity from Jimmy. Eddy delivers the pitch, promising the coolest club in the world that will have stock car races, yacht races and other expensive activities. Kevin wisely questions where Eddy will get the funding for all of this. Eddy then reveals that they'll charge membership fees, to which Double D once again questions the logistics of Eddy's ambitions. Plank raises concern that the Eds will make off with their money instead of improving the club. Eddy ensures that they are trustworthy, to which Kevin doubts the clubhouse's very existence. The Eds take the neighborhood kids to go survey the goods.

Once they arrive, the kids break out into laughter and it is revealed that the Kankers had moved into the clubhouse and renamed it Club Kanker. Several attempts at getting inside are foiled by the Kankers's defenses. The boys attempt to drown them out with water balloons. Every balloon they toss up lands harmlessly on the balcony overhang. The Kankers return fire, tossing the balloons back at the Eds and drenching both Eddy and Ed. Edd, on the other hand, nonchalantly dodges the assault better than I dodge Dark Souls bosses.

Eddy, having lost the water balloon fight but still angry enough to continue his assault, harmlessly kicks a fence posts at the base of the tree. He injures his foot and asks Ed to give him a boost up into the clubhouse. Ed grabs Eddy's injured foot, causing Eddy to let out a horrendous scream that receives another noteworthy mention for being a really good take. Eddy flies up, gets hung up on some clothes line and launches back into the ground. Ed, without hesitation, throws Eddy once more, sending him right through the floor of the clubhouse. Wonderful bit of slapstick.

The Kankers pull him inside, assault him, and then send him flying into a patch of brambles. Ed pulls him out, slaps him awake and then we get our final scene transition. Double D is pulling brambles off Eddy, in an unintentionally painful fashion, while the injured Ed-boy brainstorms about the next scam – some sort of flying, catapult ride. The episode closes with Edd scolding Eddy, telling him to stay still.

The Story

I really enjoyed the plot of this episode. Any young boy could tell you the wonders and desire to have your own clubhouse. I have vivid memories of forming a club with my brother and cousin (as I've mentioned on this blog before) and writing signs saying “No Grils” allowed – I was about four or five and forgot how to spell girls; a weird memory that will live in my head forever.

Overall, this is a really innocent story. The Eds are mostly trying to entertain themselves and just find a place they can call theirs – while also planning on turning a profit, as per usual. I'm glad the episode spent so much time on the construction of the club house, because as a hyperactive kid you typically spent more time planning a huge project than you did actually making it. I'm not sure if this kind of story would've worked as well if they didn't take the time to instill the feeling of being a kid wanting a secret place.

As I sit and write out this review after rewatching this episode for a third time in recent memory, I don't think I find any kind of fault with the story. Therefore, it clearly deserves a:

The Visuals

Episode Eight continues the visual standard that this show has. Everything is fluid and pleasing to look at. As I stated in previous reviews, my opinion on the visuals will not change very much as the series goes on, unless something noteworthy occurs.

The two designs of interest, of course, are the Eds wearing their tropical attire and the clubhouse itself. The clothes are what you would kind of expect, with only Double D's grass skirt being of note. Not that it's particularly out of place or special, but it did catch my eye on my rewatch. It is certainly in tune with Edd being much more in touch with his feminine side than his friends are.

The clubhouse itself is a wonderfully, shoddy mess and I wouldn't want it any other way. It looks homemade, a few steps from the ambitious blueprints Double D worked up, and I find that to be very fitting. Think of how many DIY projects you did as a child and how many of them you saw to completion, let alone being exactly how the blueprint intended. Even when the Kankers take over, the overall look of the clubhouse stays the same, just with a lot more pink.

That being said, the two noteworthy visual differences this episode had are not enough to change my opinion in this category. The visuals will be awarded a:

8/10

The Comedy

This episode had some wonderful slapstick and a few quick one liners. As I was looking through the episode again while grading the visuals, I even noticed an extra joke that went over my head.

As the Eds are painting the clubhouse, they have resorted to tying Ed to one of the branches. Double D makes the comment about how liberating painting is, while Ed remarks how “liberated” he feels. I feel bad, in a way, with how this joke has gone over my head for so long.

Outside of that, the visuals gags of the Eds trying to set up shop in Kevin's backyard always gets a good laugh from me. And the clubhouse slapstick segment is possibly the best slapstick the season has to offer. All of this combines into a beautiful score of:

10/10

The Scam

Now for the category that the Eds are known for. The scam in this particular episode is fine. Not one of the best scams, though I absolutely adore the clubhouse itself and the concept of it.

The main scam itself is to build a happening joint (yes, those are words that I wrote unironically) and charge the neighborhood kids membership fees. Standard stuff for the Eds. They get to become popular while also being able to afford more schemes and, of course, jawbreakers. Eddy does tell the kids that the membership fees would go back into the club itself, which is a possibility. We're certainly given the impression that Eddy does plan on cutting ties and running off with the money, though I can also see him using the membership fees to make events that earn him even more money down the line. At least, that would be the smart play.

Overall, I don't take issue with the scam. To me, the ideal scam is creative, actually scams the kids out of their money by either using a faulty product or half-baked service, and there must be a wacky invention. Club Ed certainly checks a few of those boxes, though I feel they could've gone a bit further with it. At the same time, doing anything different would have distracted from the plot a bit too much. I feel the episode earns an appropriate rating of:

7/10

The Final Tally

After some quick math and averaging I give Episode Eight – Virt-Ed-Go a rating of:

9/10
