The Best Game I've Ever Played. No, I Will Not Explain (Outer Wilds Review)

Image
Foreword What is the point? To be more accurate: why do we as people decide to do anything? The necessaties are easily explained by being required for us to survive. That's also not really what I am addressing. It's the finer things that I want to put into focus. Why am I writing this review? Why are you reading it? Why did either of us play Outer Wilds? When you strip away our need for food and shelter, what reason are we left with to do anything? Indeed, what is the point?  To experience life.  Truly, the reason why we exist is... simply that. We are here to exist and to bear witness to the world and universe and the indescribable mysticism that our existence contains. The main focus of Outer Wilds is not to answer the big question of why nor does it attempt to but by playing the masterpiece that is this game, that question ultimately gets answered. The point of Outer Wilds is to experience the game for what it is. To witness all that it has to offer. As such, it is ab...

Alien: Romulus Reminds Me Horror is Good (Review)

Image
Foreword I have a very particular taste in horror movies. When I was young and first discovered horror, I became obsessed with it. I may be able to trace that obsession back to video games with what little footage I saw of Resident Evil 4 and how desperately I wanted to play it, despite being far too young to purchase it myself. It could also be a product of the fascination with ghosts and spirits and demons I had. Regardless, I've consumed a fair bit of the horror genre as a whole. I've played numerous games, own several books, and have watched many movies, shows and videos. Perhaps this is why I have a love and hate relationship with horror movies.  I believe the problem, which is an issue for fictional media as a whole, is that horror relies heavily on the unexpected. If you've ever seen John Carpenter's Halloween, you've seen every slasher flick. If you've seen The Exorcist (I haven't. Be nice) you've seen every procession movie. If you have past ex...

Ed-N-Seek | Ed, Edd N' Eddy Season 1, Episode 12 Review

Image
Foreword Ed, Edd N Eddy for the longest time has been my favorite cartoon. Recently, HBOMax has picked up several cartoons from the late 90s and early 2000s. Unsurprisingly, I went on an immediate nostalgia bender and watched the entire series with my lady love. And what better way to celebrate several of my favorite cartoons than by systematically reviewing each episode, starting with the dorks of Peach Creek. For all of my new readers – Hey, welcome to Patchwork! - Each episode will be reviewed on a 10 point rating scale. I'll be focusing on four aspects of the show and pulling the average to get a final tally. The four categories we'll be measuring are: The Story  - The Plot of the episode, as well as the characters themselves. The Visuals  - Whether they be character, backgrounds or accessories. The Comedy  - This is a “haha” funny show, so it needs decent comedy. The Scam  - The Ploy the Eds concoct to weasel the allowances of the other kids. With the for...

Ragdoll Ramblings Monthly Newsletter August 31, 2024 So. Here We Are Again.  Once again I’m attempting to do update posts. We’ll see how long it lasts this time - hopefully for a good while. Really, I thought it would be fun to get back into the habit of writing again, since it’s certainly been far too long since I actually allowed words to flow from me. Perhaps I’m still holding onto old teachings that journaling in whatever format is good exercise for any writer. At the very least, I’ll be using these update posts to keep track of what I’m doing, goals and my progress towards them, and a way to hype myself up for my future projects.  Let’s start with what’s been going on with me personally. Unfortunately - or perhaps fortunately in the long run - I have moved out of the apartment I’ve been sharing with my lady love for four years. Rent increases but my income tends to stay the same. But, and I’ll not divulge much for the sake of possible legality, it may turn out to be for t...
